Job Description:
As an Assistant Economist in the Welsh Government, you’ll apply your economic training to a wide range of real, high-profile public policy decisions. You’ll work on live issues affecting people, communities and businesses across Wales, helping to support better decisions through clear, timely analysis.
Role of the Welsh Government
Wales has its own government, making policies and laws for Wales. We work to improve the lives of people in Wales and make it a better place to live and work. The Welsh Government is responsible for the following areas in Wales:
education
health
local government
transport
planning
economic development
social services
culture
Welsh language
environment
agriculture and rural affairs
devolved and local taxation
We develop and implement policy and, in devolved areas, propose Welsh laws (Senedd Acts).
Economists at the Welsh Government
Economists at the Welsh Government are involved in all the policy areas listed above. Economists work in other areas too including trade and welfare.
You might:
appraise investment proposals and test value for money
build clear analytical narratives for ministerial submissions
quantify the impacts of policy options and proposed legislation
support evaluations using administrative and survey data
collaborate with analysts across government to strengthen evidence
You’ll develop both technical capability (analysis, appraisal, interpretation of data) and policy skills (working to deadlines, advising decision-makers, writing clearly for non-specialists).
We invest in developing economists. In this role you can expect:
structured on-the-job learning with support from experienced economists
opportunities to build your skills through internal learning and professional development.
chances to collaborate across analytical disciplines and, where relevant, with other governments and external partners
exposure to varied policy areas and analytical approaches over time
You’ll be supported in engaging with the wider Government Economic Service, with access to professional networks, events and development.
Planned role rotations (typically within two years) help you build breadth across policy areas and accelerate development. Rotations are managed transparently, with support from the economics profession and consideration of your skills and development goals (subject to business needs). We are committed to an inclusive workplace. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and experiences. We also welcome applications from Welsh speakers and learners, and we support colleagues to use and develop Welsh language skills at work.
