About HMRC
HMRC is the UK’s tax, payments and customs authority, and we have a vital purpose: we collect the money that pays for the UK’s public services, and we help families and individuals with targeted financial support. We do this by being impartial and increasingly effective and efficient in our administration. We help the honest majority to get their tax right and make it hard for the dishonest minority to cheat the system.
The Apprenticeship Role
Social researchers in HMRC provide evidence to support tax policy development & evaluation, as well as operational design and other decisions to support the day-to day business of the department
As an apprentice social researcher, you will work alongside other researchers to help deliver qualitative & quantitative research projects and formal evaluations, to gather primary data from individuals, businesses & tax agents and to provide robust evidence to understand key issues.
You will have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects, producing research and analysis to aid key decision-making; trying to better understand how people will behave in different scenarios; improving customer service; and thinking about the impact of policies and tax reforms on taxpayers, businesses and the environment.
The Apprenticeship Community
There are already 6 Apprentice Social Researchers at HMRC who can offer advice and support to new apprentices, alongside specific apprenticeship grade managers to support with settling in and welfare. Apprentices are part of a wider community of over 130 social researchers, and around 700 analysts. The analytical community is a welcoming and vibrant community, with established networks and activities within and across professional communities.
Learning and Development Opportunities
There are many opportunities for learning and developing in HMRC. As well as on-the-job learning overseen by experienced researchers, we also offer formal training, work shadowing, job rotations, seminars, coaching, mentoring and more. You will have the opportunity to develop skills in managing research projects that are commissioned to external research agencies as well as doing primary research, for example by conducting evidence reviews, in-depth interviews and focus groups.
