About MHCLG

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government supports communities across the UK to thrive, making them great places to live and work.  MHCLG employs over 300 analysts providing high quality analytical advice to Ministers, the Executive Team and policy and corporate colleagues across all aspects of the Department’s business, including housing and planning, building safety and climate change, and homelessness and vulnerable groups.

Our analysts are responsible for economic advice, modelling and analysis, statistical analysis, data collection, data analysis and science, research, evaluation and thought leadership across all MHCLG policy areas.

The apprenticeship role and community

MHCLG’s apprentices are involved in a wide range of the department’s policies, having real impact on communities across the UK.

New apprentices will join a small cohort currently studying, alongside graduates who have progressed and remained within the department. There is an active community to help welcome new apprentices, and answer questions along the way.

Apprentices will learn how to apply their academic teaching to active real-world policies, in areas such as housing, local government, and regional inequality.  There is a wide range of work – from undertaking analysis, building our evidence base, through to presenting economics to senior decision-makers.

Previous apprentices have been involved in various high-profile projects, helping the senior Officials and Ministers make decisions on billions of pounds of funding and important new legislation, which has improved economic outcomes for large swathes of the population.

Learning and development opportunities

Our roles will give you the opportunity to apply and further develop your economics skills in a supportive environment.  There is also a range of learning and development opportunities in MHCLG, both with respect to technical, economics focused learning as well as support for wider development.
