About the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG)
At MHCLG, our work helps shape the places where people live, work and build their futures. Homes, Places and Growth describe MHCLG’s enduring purpose and provides the foundation for everything we do:
Homes To build a country where everyone has access to a warm, safe & decent home.
Places Create places with modernised local government, sustainable public services and high-quality infrastructure.
Growth To shape an economy that delivers tangible growth in every corner of the country & for all communities.
Our priorities are:
Ensuring everyone has a safe, secure and affordable home
1. Accelerating housing delivery to make progress towards the 1.5 million homes target, while ensuring new communities are supported by the infrastructure and public services they need to thrive.
2. Reforming the leasehold and private rented sectors to give people more security in their homes.
3. Tackling homelessness and rough sleeping.
4. Accelerating the remediation of dangerous cladding so that people are safe in their homes as quickly as possible.
Giving people greater control over their lives
5. Devolving more power, budgets and services to local leaders and Mayors to strengthen local economic growth and drive-up living standards.
6. Reforming locally delivered public services in local authorities and mayoral areas, so people have greater control over how decisions are made and greater trust in the democratic system.
7. Defending democracy by removing barriers to legitimate voters participating in our electoral system and upholding better standards in public life.
Strengthening community resilience with restored pride in place
8. Creating visible change and tangible opportunities for growth in our most deprived areas, underpinned by increased investment.
9. Strengthening social cohesion by working with partners to support integration and reduce the risk of future unrest.
More than 350 analysts work across MHCLG, providing high-quality advice to Ministers, the Executive Team and colleagues throughout the Department. Their work spans local growth, housing and planning, building safety, elections, climate change, homelessness and support for vulnerable groups. You could contribute to economic advice, modelling, statistics, data collection and analysis, research, evaluation, science or thought leadership—building evidence that informs decisions with real-world impact. Our analysts bring evidence and policy together to support thriving communities across the country.
What you’ll do
As an MHCLG summer student, you’ll join experienced government analysts on high-priority projects that matter to communities across the country. You’ll put your technical skills into practice, learn from supportive colleagues and build new capabilities throughout the internship. Working alongside analysts and policy professionals will also give you first-hand insight into how evidence shapes government policy.

Depending on your placement, you may collaborate across teams, work with other government departments and external stakeholders, produce research outputs, and develop practical analytical solutions for colleagues and customers.
We’ll agree the precise focus of your placement nearer the time, taking account of your skills and interests as well as business needs. Opportunities may include:
Providing analysis to inform high priority policy issues including
The local growth agenda and local economic growth
the housing market, planning policy and key policies such as Right to Buy and 1.5m homes.
building safety interventions and departmental climate change policies.
local public service reform, local government funding and sustainability and public sector efficiency; and
homelessness and rough sleeping.
Build experience in a government analytical team and connect with analysts across government.
Work in a multidisciplinary environment, combining different analytical specialisms to strengthen the evidence base and develop innovative tools and techniques for analysing data and sharing results.
Help produce innovative mapping and data visualisations for ministerial briefings and for our stakeholders and partners.
Bring your insights and ideas to our analysis.
