Job summary

About the Department

The Cabinet Office sits at the absolute centre of the UK Government, operating alongside HM Treasury to coordinate policy, deliver government priorities, and ensure the smooth running of the state. It is a unique and dynamic department that oversees the implementation of major cross-cutting strategies, manages national emergencies, and drives efficiency and modernisation across the entire Civil Service.

Working in the Cabinet Office means being where the most critical national decisions are shaped. It provides a fascinating, fast-paced environment where policy meets execution, offering an unparalleled bird's-eye view of how the UK government tackles the biggest public challenges of the day.

Overview area of work and post

The Chief Economist’s Team (CET) plays a pivotal role within the Cabinet Office. As a small, highly influential team, our mission is to champion, oversee, and elevate economic analysis across the entire department. We ensure that decision-makers and analysts have the cutting-edge evidence, data, and skills they need to design robust, impactful policies.

Summer students will have the opportunity to gain experience working alongside professional government economists to understand how academic knowledge of economics is applied in the public sector.

As a Summer placement student you will take the lead on a high-profile project to expand the Cabinet Office economic evidence base. You will own this piece of work from start to finish, identifying critical data gaps and synthesizing robust economic research to fill them. This project will leave a lasting legacy - directly improving the quality of future analysis across the department and providing Cabinet Office teams with the vital tools they need to make better, evidence-driven policy decisions for years to come. At the end of your post you will have the opportunity to present your work to the Cabinet Office Chief Economist, and other relevant stakeholders.

Summer students are fully supported in developing the knowledge and skills they require to contribute to the work of the team, this includes support in learning analytical techniques used by government analysts and developing existing I.T. skills. As well as your main project, there might also be opportunities to support the work of other Cabinet Office teams, including in the Joint Data and Analysis Centre.

Key objectives for the role include:

Eligibility Requirements

The Cabinet Office is proud of a diverse and inclusive work environment, committed to fairness and the promotion of equality of opportunity for all. We know that having a range of experiences, ways of working and thinking makes us a stronger organisation, better at developing policy that is reflective of the communities we serve. We embrace different views and experiences and value the fresh perspective that people from a variety of circumstances bring to the work we do. We welcome applications from people across all backgrounds and circumstances regardless of disability, gender, age ethnicity, LGBT+ identity and socio-economic status.

Candidates will need to hold the right to work in the UK. Individuals appointed to the Cabinet Office will be subject to National Security Vetting. To allow for meaningful checks to be carried out applicants will normally need to have lived in the UK for at least 3 out of the past 5 years. A lack of UK residency in itself is not always a bar to security clearance, but the Department will need to consider eligibility on a case-by-case basis using all information that can be obtained following a successful application.
